This bench is approximately 4' long and reflects intensive hand labor. For a start, all joints have been glued with waterproof glue and fastened with screws, and most have been mortised into their connecting piece. Any visible screw hole has been plugged with a round of hardwood glued in place. The seat is made of 5/4 (1-/16") red oak, and over the exposed grain on the ends, a lateral matching piece of oak has been fastened. Squared-off maple logs have been screwed and glued to the seat bottom, and peeled 2-3" diameter ash legs are attached to the maple cross members. Bracing the legs are solid apple and oak branches. The backrest is a peeled, naturally-curved apple branch mortised into birch uprights, and they in turn are braced to the seat by more apple wood. The balusters are a combination of apple, birch, oak, and maple mortised into the seat and backrest. The decorative supports at the ends are apple wood and apple twigs, again mortised into place. Last, but not least, the bench is finished with 5 coats of hand rubbed Tung oil.
